Rumors have been spreading regarding the possible closing of the Newtown Square Post Office at 20 N. Newtown Street Road.

According to U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Cathy Yarosky, they have not been able to come to an agreement with the landlord on a new lease.

“In this tough financial economy, it would not be responsible for the Postal Service not to weigh their options of finding the best lease possible," Yarosky said, noting that the service has been actively seeking a new location. The Postal Service is looking for space to accommodate the more than 400 post office box customers, sales of stamps, etc. and mailing services.

The lease is up May 1.

Current mail carriers will be relocated to Media, which will not affect Newtown Square residents who will retain the same carriers, Yarosky said. It was also stated that the building is in disrepair and parking is difficult.
